So gut wie jeder Spieler hat bereits im Spiel eine Nachricht erhalten, in der drin steht, dass der Account in nächster Zeit deaktiviert wird, es sei denn, man besucht eine bestimmte Webseite. Da die Nachrichten meist in einem schlechten Englisch oder einem noch schlechteren Deutsch geschrieben sind, ist den meisten Spielern sofort klar, dass es sich um keine echte von ArenaNet geschriebene Nachricht handelt.
Dies wird zudem dadurch verstärkt, dass unter der Nachricht bereits steht, dass sie von einem anderen Spieler und nicht von ArenaNet kommt. Trotzdem fallen immer noch vereinzelte Spieler auf diesen Trick herein und riskieren damit nicht nur ihren Guild Wars 2 Account, sondern geben mitunter auch ihre Bankdaten an.
Chris Cleary, Game Security Lead, hat jetzt in einem Forenpost nochmal darauf aufmerksam gemacht, dass diese Nachrichten nicht von ArenaNet kommen. Nach seiner Aussage wird es in Ingame-Nachrichten niemals einen Link geben, der uns auf eine Webseite führt, man wird niemals über Account-Probleme im Spiel selbst informiert und es werden niemals Bankdaten abgefragt, es sei denn man hat selbst den Support zu diesem Thema kontaktiert. Letzteres wird aber auch nicht im Spiel sondern per Email stattfinden.

It looks like a large number of users seem to be falling for phishing scams, not only out of game but also in game.
Here are a couple of tips to identify phishing scams:
- We will NEVER include a website address in an in-game mail
- We will NEVER contact about an account action until after it has happened
- We will NEVER ask you for your billing or personal information unless you have already contacted our Customer Support team (contact will never be initiated by us for these issues)
- We will NEVER contact you from a non ArenaNet account. This means that you will ALWAYS see an ArenaNet logo on the in game mails that we send. ANY in game mail claiming to come from ArenaNet or the Guild Wars 2 team that does not have this logo WILL have a note at the bottom stating that it did not come from us.
If you have provided your credit card information, date of birth, billing address, or any other personal information to a phishing scam, we suggest that you contact your financial institutions and let them know that your information has been compromised.
Ultimately it is your responsibility to keep your account and personal information safe.
There is a simple motto to follow: “When in doubt, don’t fill it out.”
